Perfect Imperfections

Perfect Imperfections - This artwork shows the face of a calm Buddha, rendered with a mosaic touch an effect that has always fascinated me. I worked with a cool colour palette, adding subtle darker blends to bring out the shadows on the face. As with all my works, this one too requires some distance to enjoy its three-dimensional look to be fully appreciated.
Why this title?
As many of you know, my creative process begins with identifying a theme, relating to the subject, and connecting with it. I then create a stencil and work the form through colour. For this piece, I came across a Buddha image that truly resonated with me, and I went ahead with it.
After some time, once I felt the form was finalized, I realized the image was asymmetrical. I tried a few modifications to bring more symmetry, but even if I made changes, none of them felt right or connected with me in the way the original image did. And then it struck me: it was perfect just the way it was.
Perfect, or imperfect?
My artworks are not perfect. They are not meant to be. But I try to give them some soul. In this beautiful world, we often chase perfection. It’s perfectly fine to want to improve but insisting that everything be perfect is simply not realistic. We are already perfect in the way we are.
Our faces carry scars and abrasions, a crooked nose, funny teeth, and maybe even that burnt patch of skin. These are all part of a larger kind of perfection; one we frequently overlook. Even pure alcohol tastes terrible. What gives a nice bottle of wine its character is the blend of fruity notes, the scent of oak, and perhaps some other “residues.”
